Xu Jiang
Xu Jiang is the 12th President of China Academy of Art, and he is a professor and director of Academic Committee, as well as a doctoral supervisor in CAA. He also holds several positions such as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Vice Chairman of the China Artists Association.
As a leading figure in Chinese representational painting, Xu Jiang’s works have been invited to participate in international exhibitions such as the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Sao Paulo Art Biennial. He has been honored with awards such as the Excellence Award at the 2nd Beijing Biennale and the Lu Xun Art Prize. In recent years, his Sunflower Garden series has been showcased in major solo exhibitions at numerous art museums domestically and internationally. His works are held in the collections of many international art museums.
As an important advocate for contemporary Chinese art, Xu Jiang initiated the establishment of significant international academic exhibitions in China such as the Shanghai Biennale, Hangzhou Chinese Painting Biennale, and China Oil Painting Biennale. He has organized and curated major exhibitions and art activities, such as Edge of the Earth: Migration of Contemporary Asian Art and Regional Politics. He has published over ten monographs and more than 150 academic collections.
In 2001, as Vice President, Xu Jiang provided great support for the suggestion made by Lu Jie and Zheng Shengtian to establish the first training course for Chinese art curators at China Academy of Art. When the Visual Culture Research Center (the predecessor of ICAST) was established in 2003, he personally served as the director as the President. Over the next twenty years, he continued to trust and value ICAST, serving as academic director and consultant for many core projects, such as Edge of the Earth: Migration of Contemporary Asian Art and Regional Politics, 5th Shanghai Biennale: Techniques of the Visible, West Heavens project, the establishment of the Inter-Asia School, and the 八五·85 project.
