Liu Tian

Executive Director, Lecturer

Liu Tian is the Executive Director and Lecturer of ICAST; Ph.D in Visual Culture and Curatorial Studies; the founder of Open Matter Institute.

Liu Tian is a curator and writer and has a long-term commitment to the joint notion of “research-creativity”. His work spans curatorial, creative practice, theoretical research, design, and writing.

He was the member of the curatorial collegiate of the 11th Shanghai Biennale: Why Not Ask Again: Arguments, Counter-arguments and Stories, the Chief Curator of Being Theoria: 4th Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art in 2022, and jury member on several art prizes including the Hyundai Blue Prize ART+TECH (2020, 2021) and Huayu Youth Award (2017, 2018, 2020). He had won the Power Station of Art (PSA) 1st Emerging Curators Award in 2014, Dot Design Award 2018, etc.

Since 2006, He has participated in curating series academic exhibitions, including: Word Squaring the World, from paper to paper, The Way Toward Poetry, Be In a Half of Maze, Inter-World-View, Catch the Muddle, Passage of Sinthome, Condition, SAVE AS: A Theory Opera, The Nights of Work-er, Cause and Examples Projected from It, Museum of Inspiration 1.0, Lyrical and Epic, Anyball, Transparent Iron, 达-da Manifesto: Homage but not Hostage, Void: There’s Nothing More Left, but a Little Trace From Human Beings, Ash/Blade/Frame/Ocean, Memorandum for Gaia, etc.

As a writer, his works have been published by multiple journals, including Art Forum, Leap, Art World, New Arts, etc. He was the finalist of the 7th International Award for Art Criticism (IAAC) in 2021.

His current focus is on a broadening of Curatorial Design aimed at the general public, while simultaneously exploring practice in grassroots localities, classical origins, and cutting-edge technology. He teaches curatorial theory and practice as a faculty member of ICAST.
