5th Shanghai Biennale: Techniques of the Visible was curated by Xu Jiang, with Zheng Shengtian as co-curator, and Gao Shiming as assistant curator.

This biennale used the principal spaces for contemporary image production and consumption—such as the ‘film studio’, ‘Theater, ‘Darkroom’, ‘Painting Studio’, and ‘Cinema’—as its framework. It constructed a multi-layered system of discourse and narrative around ‘image-existence’ ,exploring how images created in art sit atop the everyday image world. It also examined the mechanisms of power between the images found in art museums and the images seen on television, in film, and online media, and their relationship to the mass media.
