Yellow Box is a programme of creative and exhibition projects initiated by Johnson Chang and Gao Shiming, in response to the habitual ‘white cube’ format. It aims to explore the possibility of a distinctly Chinese exhibition space and viewing format. The concept is both an exploration of traditional Chinese spatial display and an interpretation of the spirit of literati painting and calligraphy within contemporary art.
In 2005, Yellow Box project presented Yellow Box: Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting in Taiwan at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. This exhibition aimed to create an intermediary space within the museum to present specifically Chinese traditional viewing experiences. In 2006, China Academy of Art, in collaboration with Asia Art Archive (AAA) presented Time + Architecture, and with the support of the Shanghai Qingpu District Government and the Shanghai Qingpu New Town Corporation, presented the large-scale exhibition A Yellow Box in Qingpu: Contemporary Art and Architecture in a Chinese Space. This exhibition showcased and reflected on various experiments in contemporary art and architecture within distinctly Chinese spaces.
