八五·85 was a special exhibition commemorating the 85th anniversary of China Academy of Art. Xu Jiang served as the academic chair, with Gao Shiming as chief curator and Gao Shiqiang as chief director of video production. Students Weng Zhenqi and Tang Xiaolin from ICAST were key members of the curatorial team, and over a hundred faculty and students from ICAST and the academy participated in the planning, research, and production of the exhibition.
The theme of this anniversary exhibition “八五·85” focused on the year 1985. It conducted a historical study of the numerous figures and events associated with the academy, using 1985 as a snapshot to reflect on its 85 year history. The exhibition featured 85 alumni, revisiting their experiences of the year 1985. Through artworks, documents, interviews, and short films, the exhibition vividly presented the historical experiences and artistic practices of several generations at this significant moment.
The exhibition aimed to correct the simplistic understanding of the ’85 Movement. By retracing the historical conditions , it sought to reproduce the causes of this important art movement of Chinese art. Furthermore, it attempted to explore the historical and social significance of the art movement within the framework of 20th-century Chinese modernity.
