Introduction

After three decades of social and cultural practice, Chen has established himself as a ‘transmedia artist’, employing a combination of video, stage, painting and text operating within narrative frameworks. The best embodiment of this model is his ‘Ink Project’ from 2019. Titled ‘The Feather Letter’, it featured the video ‘Street Style’, the song Shanxin de Ren, and a novel of the same name. The theme of this lecture will reveal the intricate relationship between social and cultural practice and artistic creation through the exhibition The Feather Letter, and return to the ‘limited possibilities’ of artistic production, while expanding the boundaries of art: do what you want to do, what you can do, and build your own real world.
