Introduction

What kind of work is writing? What does one write for? Fiction or nonfiction? Bodies or fragments? Grand histories or private records? What else can be written about art criticism? How does one understand authorship and totality? How do creators choose their mediums? Does one add or subtract?  Is the medium elastic or does something make it elastic? In cross-media writing, what transforms and what stays the same? Should one choose to be a wanderer? This lecture will be divided into two halves, each with a question-and-answer session. The first half will focus on the speaker’s practice, exploring topics such as ‘pure literature and film based on personal experience and family history’, ‘drama in contemporary art’, ‘literature and behavior’, and ‘art criticism’. In the second half, the presenter will introduce several creators whose work is intimately connected to their own lives and environments, such as Abbas Kiarostami, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Shantal Akerman, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Antony Gormley, and Francis Alys.
