Introduction

In recent years, He Ruian’s artistic practice has focused on a question: when we refer to the economy, what are we actually talking about? Ruian  studied a series of seemingly abstract and vague concepts that emerged during China’s reform and opening up period, such as ‘financial capitalism’ and ‘socialist market economy’, and through artistic practice, returned them to a place of real intellectual scope. This lecture explores how to make abstract economic concepts concrete, and uses tangible observation to think about what exactly we are mean  when we talk about ‘the economy’.
