The Institute of Contemporary Art & Social Thoughts (ICAST) is part of the School of Intermedia Art (SIMA) at the China Academy of Art (CAA), located in Hangzhou, China. ICAST is an institute of curatorial studies for doctoral and master’s degree candidates.
The Institute is devoted to building an integrated knowledge system that brings together social thought, media experimentation, and diverse art and curatorial practices. Here, art is positioned as a form of social thought that contributes to the production of intellectual and perceptual knowledge.
The teaching staff of ICAST consists of established curators, artists, and scholars from around the world. ICAST's educational framework is based on a four-way interaction between cultural studies, curatorial practice, media experiments, and artistic creation. The degree programme is designed to cultivate critics and curators with both intellectual vigour and the capacity to realize independent projects.
